After a long wait, the Goethe-Institut has announced a date for the presentation of the results of the BUCHSCHMUCK competition. The event is also combined with the PARAGRAPH exhibition by the TI-RE collective.
Here is the program for the long Saturday afternoon:
Official opening of "Buchschmuck" and announcement of the winners - 5:30 p.m.
Official opening of "Paragraph" and presentation by TI-RE - 6:00 p.m.
Earlier this year, the Goethe-Institut held the "Buchschmuck" literary illustration competition. At the same time, and completely independently, the "Paragraph" open call was running, in which the TI-RE collective was looking for the most interesting art books inspired by or interpreting literary works. Now the two initiatives are being combined with a joint opening in both buildings of the Goethe-Institut on June 2.
The association aims to present the diversity of artists’ techniques, approaches and strategies for working with text and image. While the Goethe-Institut competition deals with single images, book cover proposals and illustrations of individual scenes from (German-language) books, the Paragraph project is entirely focused on the specific format of the art book.
The ten finalists in the Buchschmuck competition will be presented in an exhibition at the Goethe-Institut Language Center at 11 Benkovski Street. The winners of the competition, selected by a jury consisting of Kiril Zlatkov, Maya Razboynikova-Frateva, Zimone Brahman-Bose and Stefka Tsaneva, will be announced at the opening at 5:00 p.m. Finalists in the competition are: Alexander Medvedev, Andrea Popyordanova, Anna Simeonova, Borislava Karadjova, Vyara Boyadzhieva, Vyara Boyadzhieva, Lilyana Dvoryanova, Omana Katsarska, Radostina Peneva, Sirma Karagyozova
An hour later, at 6:00 p.m., the official opening of the "Paragraph" exhibition will take place in the Goethe-Institut building at 1 Budapest Street. The audience will also be able to meet the organizers from the TI-RE collective, as well as some of the authors of the books in the exhibition. The exhibition will showcase the works of the authors Alexandra Dimitrova, Alina Papazova, Desi Naydenova, Elitsa Marinova, Karina Dobreva, Martian Tabakov, Mihaela Angelova, Mihaela Krasteva, Nikol Decheva, Niya Pushkarova, Omana Katsarska, Poliksena Stamatova, Ralitsa Stratieva, Sofia Popyordanova, Teodor Genov, Toma Galov, Yael Taig. Their works embody different interpretations of the author's text and use different materials, such as paper, metal and plaster, in an effort to provide a different perspective on what a book is.
Especially for the literary theme of the two exhibitions, the opening will be in an extended format from 15:00 to 19:00 on Saturday, June 2. In this wider than traditional opening time range, the audience will have the opportunity to view the exhibitions, get acquainted with the works that are illustrated, and examine the participating books.
