On April 19, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., the gallery of the State Cultural Heritage Institution “The Palace” in Balchik “The Quiet Nest” and the gallery “Ilia Beshkov” – Pleven, presented an exhibition of works by Iliya Beshkov. On the occasion of the event, we spoke with the director of the cultural center – Zheni Mihaylova.
Over 300 thousand tourists visit the Palace in Balchik annually and this is one of the main reasons why the director of the museum is presenting this particular exhibition. “These tourists should take away the best of Bulgaria. For us, it would be best for such a great artist as Iliya Beshkov to be shown to the world. This is the idea with which we started and decided that the originals of Iliya Beshkov’s cartoons would be seen by more people”. The exhibition is visiting the region for the first time and until now the exhibition has not been presented in northeastern Bulgaria. “The impact of his work is beyond words. Only his talent can show the world how great his choice, vocation, civic and value system are.”
Among the originals, visitors can easily recognize political themes and references that are still relevant today, even though they were published more than 60 years ago in the newspapers “Political Flag”, “Agricultural Flag”, “Horse Horn” and others. In total, 64 works will be shown to the public by the cultural center. The exhibition is divided into two stages and will last until the end of June. In April, 34 caricatures of the artist, drawn mainly after 1944, will be exhibited, and the following month – 30 illustrations.
Our conversation ended with the words of Iliya Beshkov himself from his autobiographical book “The Word”: “I was clear about all the human ideas that people and I myself were excited about, but I never, never put any idea above man.”
