The exhibition shows a new plastic reading of the Bulgarian form of the Cyrillic alphabet, with which the author draws attention to the inability of the state to affirm the Bulgarian alphabet before the World. The thirty letters are executed in a variety of techniques and materials, from a reshaped street sign to a formless sound that echoes in space.
The works included in the exhibition “Imperfect Alphabet” are handmade. In the process, Todor Georgiev experiments with different techniques and materials. The achieved forms are not ideal, they are attempts, each of which is a lesson for the artist and potentially for the audience. The artist says about his project: “The letter has never lived in just one medium. It has been scratched, hammered, cut, cast, printed, written, painted, drawn before we reached its mass use on screens today. The exhibition, to a large extent, is influenced by this – a break from the chair and the monitor and a return to the physical form of the letter, made by hand.” This applicability is also evident in the works themselves. Through various techniques, we are given the opportunity to rethink the form, dynamics and volume of our well-known letters and to place them in space as objects. “Imperfect Alphabet” poses plastic questions to the viewers about the Bulgarian script, its representation and modality, about the value and meaning of the sign, new approaches to it and its functional essence.
