On the eve of the Day of Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Writing, Kiril Zlatkov, Tipofest and the Cultural Center of Sofia University are pleased to invite you to the exhibition “New Bulgarian Typography II” – graphic design and contemporary typography by Bulgarian authors. The exhibition will open on Wednesday, May 22, at 7:00 PM in the Central Lobby of the Rectorate, and will continue until June 10.
In “New Bulgarian Typography II”, curator Kiril Zlatkov collects 70 works by artists and author teams from different generations – from classics of Bulgarian design to promising student submissions. They are an overview of the achievements in type art, typographic practice and typographic experiments between the first edition of the exhibition in 2013 and today. The two exhibitions will soon find their continuation on the website www.typograhy.bg – a constantly expanding collection that has the ambition to present the best in Bulgarian typography.
Unlike the first exhibition, “New Bulgarian Typography II” is not focused only on the Cyrillic alphabet, but on the design sense for contemporary typographic activity in general. “The diversity of the participating works aims to go beyond the festival variety and emotional fluctuations, to direct the attention of the professional and wider public to the fact that at the basis of both font families and logo design, as well as expressive posters and calligraphic experiments, there is knowledge of the principles of composition, a sense of pure form, the structure of letters, and, of course, the laws of beauty,” says curator Kiril Zlatkov.
After the first “New Bulgarian Typography”, the manifesto of the Bulgarian Cyrillic alphabet appeared – a call to popularize and enrich the Bulgarian graphic form of the Cyrillic alphabet as part of our cultural identity. And although market circumstances impose Russian fonts, the Bulgarian Cyrillic alphabet – with its characteristic differences between capital and regular letters and upper and lower lengths – has a present that arouses reasonable optimism, the curator believes.
“In recent years, many serious font families with specific and general applications have appeared in Bulgaria and abroad, including those created with the specifics of long texts and prolonged reading in mind. The dynamics of the market and the actual use of new author fonts dictate adequate behavior of authors. In every era it has been so, by its very nature, design is called upon to follow a function, to find specific solutions to aesthetic, communication or functional problems,” says Kiril Zlatkov.
Such and other achievements of Bulgarian designers can be viewed in the central lobby under the Rector's auditorium until June 10. "New Bulgarian Typography II" is a valuable document for the aesthetic and social horizons of contemporary society. This is another chance to look at reality with a critical eye, but also to discover more and increasingly accessible solutions for beauty in communication around the world and in our country.
