On the Day of the People's Enlighteners and on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the National Museum of Natural History and 150 years since the founding of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, DAPHNI dedicates its annual exhibition to a great but unknown enlightener – Yordan Filchev.

Yordan Filchev – a remarkable scientific illustrator, who worked as a preparator and artist at the Royal Institutes of Natural History, the Zoological Institute and the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from the 1930s to the late 1950s. His precise and accurate drawings with watercolor, pencil and pen and ink are an integral part of dozens of scientific publications by notable Bulgarian zoologists on the pages of Izvestia na Tzarskite Izvestia na Izvestia na Zoological Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. From 1941 to 1944, he participated as an artist in the expeditions of the prominent naturalist Alexi Petrov along the Aegean coast - the island of Thassos, the island of Samothrace and the coastline from Aenos to Kavala. His unique drawings from life of marine inhabitants are part of the exhibition of 1500 exhibits, arranged in the building of the Natural History Museum in 1947. Unfortunately, a very small part of Yordan Filchev's artistic heritage has been preserved for generations. In times of turbulent events and historical upheavals, the memory of the artist's personality and life has sunk into oblivion. What is stored in the book depository of the IBEI-BAS library is not much, but it gives a sufficient idea of his unique talent as a scientific illustrator. The current exhibition of 13 works by Yordan Filchev shows the best of his work. The brilliant drawings of marine invertebrates (mushrooms, worms, mollusks and crustaceans), ticks and insects transport us to the time of creation and establishment of Bulgarian zoological science, a time of discovery and selfless work.
