World Book and Copyright Day was designated for celebration by UNESCO at the United Nations and celebrated for the first time in 1995. By celebrating this day worldwide, the world organization seeks to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature. On this date in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died. This is the birth date of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, Halldor Laxnes, Vladimir Nabokov and others.

Twenty-eight Bulgarian athletes joined the campaign to promote children's reading "The March of Books" 2019
"We read together, we grow together!"
The national campaign to promote reading "The March of Books" is a completely non-commercial initiative and is organized by the Bulgarian Book Association, in partnership with the Sofia Municipality and with the assistance of the Regional Department of Education - Sofia-city, the Bulgarian Library and Information Association, "Global Libraries" - Bulgaria and the Children's Books Foundation.
Its main goal is to attract popular people in Bulgaria, from various professional fields, to give their example and contribution to promoting children's reading, by drawing public attention to how important reading is for the proper emotional and intellectual development and growth of every child. The “Book March” campaign starts annually on the festive April 2 (International Children’s Book Day and Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday) and continues until April 23, declared by UNESCO as International Book and Copyright Day.
From April 2 to 23, 2019, the campaign involved 28 Bulgarian athletes – true legends from the world of sports, who met with more than 3,000 children from Sofia in 13 kindergartens, 17 schools and two of Caritas’ centers for refugee children and children of Roma origin. The meetings were extremely emotional and turned into a real celebration. The athletes read from their favorite children’s books and emphasized the importance of reading for pleasure, signed autographs and told the children fascinating stories about their achievements and how important it is for every success to train not only the body, but also the mind. Titi Papazov signed over 60 autographs with the message “Books are wealth”, most athletes signed over 100 autographs by name, Simona Peycheva made an analogy between her favorite children’s fairy tale “The Little Match Girl” and the fact that sports can be full of difficulties and trials. Neshka Robeva, within an hour and a half, tells about several favorite books and fairy tales in front of more than 500 children. For the first year, the “Book March” visited two of the Caritas centers, with Reneta Kamberova meeting with refugee children, and Alexandra Zhekova visiting the center for supporting Roma children.
Within the framework of the national campaign "The March of Books", the following initiatives were also included: the BBIA - "Reading Marathon", which covered 100 libraries from 43 cities and 40 villages, the pan-European campaign "Europe Reads", presented for Bulgaria by the "Children's Books" Foundation, which aims to engage the public with data on functional literacy in children and the need to read aloud for 15 minutes every day in order to overcome the statistics that 73 million adults in Europe are illiterate, and one in ten students drops out of school. Forecasts indicate that by 2020 this will lead to a 30% increase in the low-skilled workforce. The book of "Europe Reads" collects the signatures of European politicians who support the campaign. It was presented in Bulgaria for the first time by Val Stoeva from the "Children's Books" Foundation, during the press conference on April 2, within the framework of the launch of the "March of Books" campaign.
The campaign to encourage children's reading "The March of Books" ends on April 23 - International Book and Copyright Day, with the reading of the famous sports journalist - Kamen Alipiev in the capital's 7th Secondary School and yoga instructor Daniel Petrov in the 42nd Primary School "Hadji Dimitar".
