Two names (and a pseudonym):
Antonina Georgieva

Introduce yourself in a few words:
I am an artist and graphic designer, I work mostly in the field of book art. I love silence and working at night. I like elegant humor in design and in people. I am a music lover. I believe that art is what makes the world bearable.

What did you graduate from?
I graduated from the Bachelor's program "Graphics and Illustration" at the NBU and the Master's degree "Book Art" at the National Academy of Arts.

What is your professional experience so far?
I have worked as a freelance graphic designer and book artist for various publishing houses, as well as for private clients. From the very beginning of my professional career, I have been designing the layout of many of the publications of Scribens Publishing House, and for several years I have also been an artist at the University Publishing House "St. Kliment Ohridski". Before specializing in book design, my favorite activity was drawing portraits. I've done other things too – illustrations, logos, posters, advertising materials, magazines, various printed publications, music album design (which remains one of my favorite projects).

Tell us more about your work (style, technique, interests, way of working):
It's hard for me to define my style exactly, I think it's changed a lot over the years. But if I had to describe it in a few words – minimalist, elegant, with attention to detail. These are the definitions I hear most often about it. I would like to be able to add "bold", but I'm still working on it. As a technique, I've used everything from traditional ink and pen to more unusual things. I have one cover, the title of which, for example, is made of letters cut out of orange peels. I can also think of another one, for which I specifically drew and cut out some abstract illustrations, which I still didn't think were good enough. In the end, I made it with a collage of random clippings that were left as waste and it turned out better than my original plan. I really like this in the work of an artist – the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, although it also brings me anxiety. I am a curious person, my interests change in different directions, but for some time they have been focused on the visual play with typography, with words. Lately, I have also shown interest in collage, in mixing different media. I would like to work on a music album again. Someday I will probably return to my first student love in the face of printed graphics, more precisely etching and lithography.

Exhibitions/participations/performances/awards:
I have participated in various collective exhibitions, including: Book and Font at the Union of Bulgarian Artists, three consecutive editions of the Biennial of Illustration, the Biennial of Humor and Satire in Art in Gabrovo, Paper Art Fest Sofia, the International Biennial The Art of Miniature and others, and in 2018 I had my first and only solo exhibition so far in Hralupata. My illustrations and covers have been published in various online and print media, and I have been selected for the best covers of the year by Manager magazine and Slaveykov Square. In 2023, I illustrated and published my debut book of poems "Salt", for whose illustrations I received a certificate for a realized work at the 2024 Biennale of Illustration.

Illustrated works:
I will mention a few: Ostava's music album "Oxygen", "The Pole of Life" by Hristo Muhtanov, "Bruises" by Chanel Erkin, "Trees for Hugging" by Tsvetelina Alexandrova, my book of poems "Salt". Most of my work is actually related to illustrating and designing covers.

Who is your favorite illustrator?
Yana Levieva, Joanna Consejo, Tove Jansson, Owen Gent, Yassen Gyuzelev and more.

What is your favorite illustrated book?
All the Moomintrol books by Tove Jansson, my favorite is also "The Lost Soul" by Olga Tokarczuk with illustrations by Joanna Consejo.

What book do you dream of illustrating?
I really like "Call Me by Your Name" by André Aciman, it left a strong visual impression on me when I read it, and I've been wanting to do something based on it ever since. Also one of Haruki Murakami's books. I would be happy to do a cover or illustrations based on Margaret Atwood.
