Two names (and a pseudonym):
Yana Popova
Introduce yourself in a few words:
Award-winning illustrator of children's books with a passion for colors and screen printing.
What did you major in?
At school - graphics, at university I thought about graduating in interior design. Something I never finished, which I don't regret.
What is your professional experience so far?
For the last 10 years I have been dealing exclusively with illustration and can boast of working on over 30 illustrated books, several participations in exhibitions, several award-winning publications and clients from all over the world.
Tell us more about your work (style, technique, interests, way of working):
My work is quite colorful. I love using bright colors, although lately I have been experimenting with more monochrome palettes. My style ranges from watercolor to cartoon to graphics and mixed media combined with textures and lots of detail. My way of working is pretty standard but it always starts with a manuscript. Before accepting a book project, I always read the manuscript. This is a mandatory step for me, because if a manuscript doesn’t evoke images in my head, then I’m not the right illustrator for the project. If the manuscript evokes my imagination, then the work starts according to the client’s needs, but always with rough sketches, moving on to clean ones until the final version in color is reached.
Exhibitions/participations/performances/awards:
I have participated in many exhibitions, but the most striking for me will be the group exhibitions during the London Book Fair, Brick Lane Gallery and my solo exhibition at L44 Space (Sofia). Books I have worked on have won “Biserche Valshebno” and the ‘’International Latino Book Awards’’.
