The 2023 edition of the Leipziger Buchmesse marked a full-scale comeback. Held from 27–30 April 2023, the fair reclaimed its traditional spring calendar slot and welcomed thousands of visitors back to the Leipzig exhibition grounds.
Under the motto “Literally Surprising!”, the event highlighted discovery, diversity and renewed enthusiasm for in-person exchange. Approximately 2,500 exhibitors from around the world participated, reflecting Leipzig’s role as one of Europe’s most important public-oriented book fairs.
“Leipzig thrives on direct encounters between authors and readers,” the fair’s directors declared in a press statement. “After years of uncertainty, the halls are alive again with debate, inspiration and the joy of reading.”
The city-wide Leipzig liest once more formed the heart of the programme. Hundreds of readings, panel discussions and book launches transformed Leipzig into a vibrant literary stage. Independent publishers stood alongside major houses, while international guests contributed global perspectives to contemporary debates.
Parallel to the book fair, the Manga-Comic-Con attracted strong attendance, particularly among younger audiences. Cosplay events, artist meet-and-greets and discussions on graphic storytelling reflected the fair’s broad understanding of literary culture.
“The Leipzig Book Fair is more than a marketplace,” organisers emphasised. “It is a cultural festival that celebrates the many forms of storytelling — from classic literature to manga and digital formats.”
Industry representatives highlighted the importance of face-to-face networking after the dominance of digital communication during the pandemic years. Rights negotiations, media interviews and spontaneous conversations once again defined the atmosphere.
With robust visitor turnout and strong exhibitor participation, 2023 signalled not merely recovery but renewed confidence. Leipzig reasserted its identity as a forum for debate, creativity and European exchange
