It is planned that from May 11 to 13, 2022, in Sliven, at the initiative of the Regional Library "Sava Dobroplodni" in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sliven Municipality, Regional Administration - Sliven, the Bulgarian Children's Book Association, the largest children's publishing houses, etc., the XXIV National Children's Book Festival will be held. This is the only forum in Bulgaria dedicated entirely to children's books, to the problems related to their publication, distribution and reading in the digital age. Taking into account the new challenges in organizing the event in the conditions of the spread of Covid 19 and based on the experience of implementing last year's edition of the festival in the new reality, the organizers of the 24th edition are working on a new concept for its holding, with new content and forms, so that it can be held this year as well, because today more than ever, children need live communication, contact with books and other arts, and opportunities for creative expression.
The hopes of the organizers, partners and supporters of the festival are that the country will cope with the pandemic situation more quickly and that it will be possible to hold the festival in May, but if there are any major restrictions, other dates are planned for the festival /June 6-9 or in September/.
Along with the numerous events organized within the framework of the festival, in order to provoke the imagination and creativity of children and teenagers from all over the country and from Bulgarian communities abroad, a National Literary Competition and a National Competition for Making Theater Puppets of Favorite Literary Characters will also be held this year.
National Literary Competition
The theme of the National Literary Competition is “Stories from the Happiness Shop”. Children and adolescents aged 7 to 18 years old, divided into three age groups: 7 – 10 years, 11 – 14 years, 15 – 18 years old, can participate in the competition. Each participant has the right to submit up to 2 literary works /short story, fairy tale, poem/ specially created for the competition. The works should be up to 5 standard computer pages /60-66 characters per line, 28-30 lines per page/ and should be sent by e-mail in electronic form. A competent jury will evaluate the works. The awarded literary works will be published in a collection.
The awards of the awarded participants will be presented at a special ceremony during the days of the XXIV National Children's Book Festival. If the festival cannot be held from May 11 to 13, 2022 due to the pandemic, the awarded participants will be notified in a timely manner of the new dates of the festival and the award ceremony. National competition for making theater puppets
Within the framework of the XXIV National Children's Book Festival - Sliven, May 11-13, 2022, the Eleventh National Competition for Making Theater Puppets of Favorite Literary Characters will also be held. The competition is open to children and adolescents aged 7 to 16, divided into three age groups: 7-10 years, 11-14 years, 15-16 years. Each participant has the right to submit up to 2 puppets. The puppets must be over 35 cm tall.
A competent jury will evaluate the works. The awards of the awarded participants will be presented at a special ceremony during the festival. The dolls of the participants in the competition will not be returned. An exhibition will be organized with them, which can be visited during the festival. The dolls of the awarded participants will be included in the exhibition of the only Museum of the Theater Puppet of Favorite Literary Characters in Bulgaria, located in the “Sava Dobroplodni” Regional State Historical Park – Sliven. In it, both children and adults, in a fantastic and fairy-tale atmosphere, can enjoy both the many and interesting dolls, as well as the amazing and diverse craftsmanship of their creators.
