On November 22, 2022, the halls of the "Triangular Tower of Serdica" once again hosted the "Biennale of Illustration" exhibition. This time without anti-epidemic measures, but with an official opening, we had the pleasure and honor of gathering friends and acquaintances, colleagues and future ones in one colorful moment. Thanks to our invaluable partnership with the Regional History Museum - Sofia, the exhibition in the "Triangular Tower of Serdica" hall will be open to visitors every day from 10:00 to 18:00, from November 22 to January 27, 2023.
In this (third) edition, guests will be able to see nearly 300 works by 115 artists, created over the past two years. During the opening yesterday, the awards in the three categories were also presented, and this time there were five awardees. In the "Unrealized Works" category, the prize went to Irina Dzhonkova, and a diploma went to Natalia Stambolova. In the category "Realized Works" the award went to Lalo Nikolov, and a diploma went to Elizaveta Belova. The awards were presented by Milena Radeva and the Deputy Mayor for "Culture, Education, Sports and Youth Activities" Miroslav Borshosh. For his long-term work in the world of Bulgarian scientific illustration, the lifetime achievement award was presented to Georgi Pchelarov - an incredible artist who is actually a biologist by training, one of the artists of the Red Book of Bulgaria, the artist of the first bird identifier on the Balkan Peninsula, the chairman of the "Society of Animalists, Florists and Scientific Illustrators".
We thank all 290 artists who submitted their works in this difficult year and personally brought and sent their selected works. We appreciate what you have done to make the Biennale of Illustration exist, because the Biennale is you!
We also want to thank this year's team led by Milena Radeva, Hristina Grozdanova, who also this year (we hope next year) helped our successful partnership with the Regional History Museum - Sofia, Viktor Alexandrov created the Biennial website and the form for applying, Nikoleta Gologanova, who was the first person to believe in the Biennial back in 2017, Elena Pavlova, who compiled the catalog. The diplomas are the work of Kristiyan Terziev, and the awards were produced by Gravoprint. The catalog was printed by our friends from Artgraf. Iliya Petrov is always an invaluable help during the sorting. We also want to thank the jury, who this year had the difficult task of reviewing 722 works, which included Boyana Pavlova (artist and lecturer at the National Academy of Arts), and Slyavina Ilieva (publisher in Bulgaria and Switzerland). For the media campaign and coverage, we once again worked in partnership with ArunaPR, and localfonts.eu provided us with the Opal font, which is a key part of the Biennale’s vision. This year, the “Biennale of Illustration” was also realized with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture.
