The exhibition “Japanese Graphic Design – ginza graphic gallery: Exhibition Posters 1986–2025” presents a specially curated selection of approximately 100 posters, selected by the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion.
A collection of 409 original posters and 133 books related to Japanese graphic design and the exhibition activities of ginza graphic gallery (ggg), Tokyo, is arriving in Bulgaria. The collection forms part of the cultural heritage preserved and presented by the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, which will develop a long-term programme in Bulgaria for the presentation of the collection in partnership with Amateras Foundation – its principal partner and representative of the programme in Bulgaria.
Within this partnership, Amateras Foundation will coordinate the presentation, curatorial projects and future exhibitions of the collection in Bulgaria, in cooperation with DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion and the host cultural institutions.
The first exhibition within this long-term programme will be shown at the National Palace of Culture (NDK) from 1 to 20 October 2026, as part of the 37th Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria, Salon des Arts and Sofia Paper Art Fest 2026.
The posters were created for representative exhibitions held at ginza graphic gallery (ggg) – a gallery operated by the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion – from its establishment in 1986 until 2025. The selection includes significant designers, generations and directions in graphic design, offering an opportunity to trace the development of Japanese graphic design over nearly four decades.
Such a curated exhibition focusing on an important period in the development of Japanese graphic culture, and on designers and visual trends presented by one of the significant platforms for Japanese graphic design, will be held for the first time in Bulgaria.
The poster will be exhibited not only as a means of visual communication, but also as a work of art and a document of its time – reflecting changes in aesthetics, typography, technology and visual thinking.
The DNP Graphic Design Archive was established in 2000 with the aim of preserving and passing on to future generations the rich expressive achievements and creative legacy of contemporary graphic design.
Focusing primarily on posters, the Archive collects, preserves and makes graphic design works publicly accessible. As of 2026, it comprises approximately 25,000 works by 247 designers from Japan and other countries, providing an important foundation for tracing the development of Japanese graphic design.
The arrival of the collection of 409 posters and 133 books in Bulgaria creates an opportunity for it to be presented in other curatorial formats over the coming years. Future exhibitions may explore individual designers and generations, historical periods, themes, styles, typography and different directions in the development of Japanese graphic design.
This strategy will allow the collection to be gradually researched and presented to different audiences in Bulgaria, creating opportunities for further exhibitions at NDK and at other museums, galleries and cultural spaces.
The exhibition will be officially opened on 1 October 2026 at 6:00 PM by H.E. Mr. Chikahisa Sumi, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Bulgaria. Mrs. Sachio Itou and Mr. Yusuke Matsuura from the DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, Tokyo and Paris, will also travel to Sofia especially for the event.
