For the third year in a row, we have dedicated the month of May to letters. The first time we presented their creators, the second time – calligraphy, this year we have focused on logos and logotypes, so… on four consecutive Mondays you will see the works of four (five) colleagues who have dedicated their creativity to this difficult mission. We started with Svetoslav Stankov, continued with Кristian Terziev, Letter Collective, а за финал – Мария Стоянова.
Maria Stoyanova, Merryelle Design
Education: Bachelor's degree from TU-Sofia "Engineering Design"
Professional experience: I have many years of professional experience in the development of logo design and corporate identity. Later, I felt a strong attraction to wedding invitations and created an online store in one of the world's largest platforms for selling wedding and party invitations.
Exhibitions/projects/awards/participations: I have 33 wins in international logo competitions on 99designs. Now my logos are used by the site administrators as an example and inspiration for subsequent competitions.
What does it actually mean to make logos/logotypes? Tell us about your process.
Creating a logo is actually a rather responsible, complex and creative process. The logo is the foundation of every brand and is the symbol that represents a business to the world, it should speak about the brand in a memorable and impressive way.
My process always starts with research and gathering inspiration. It is important to know more about the field of activity of the respective brand, as well as the target group that will use the company's services. The main idea is carefully discussed with the client in advance, his wishes and preferences for style, appearance, colors, typography, the presence or absence of certain symbols and shapes. Once the main idea is clear, I start developing sample design concepts. I sketch them by hand or directly in a graphics program. Usually I get so deep into the process that I come up with dozens of options, from which I choose the best ones and present them to the client. Creativity, combined with technically applicable design, for me is the working concept for a valuable logo.
Is the logo/logotype an illustration?
The logo is basically a graphic sign and strives to be as minimalistic and simple as possible, while the illustration is more of an artistic image composed of more details. Although I would say that nowadays we see more and more logos with an illustrative nature, which, as long as it complies with the technical requirements and is maximally compact and stylized, turns out quite impressive.
What is the logo/logo of what do you dream of creating?
For me, the most attractive are projects in the fashion and cosmetics industry, photography, art, handmade studios, etc. But I do not limit myself at all - I like to create both stylish and clean typographic designs, as well as more creative ones, and you will see it in my work.
What do people most often NOT know about making a logo/logo? What are the pitfalls?
At first glance, creating a logo seems like an easy task. But when we dive into the matter, we understand that it is not at all like that. People don't know that in this field, as in any other, talent is a good start, but it is not enough, it must be supported by a lot of effort, time, inspiration, patience and constant work. Then things work out.
Favorite examples that have inspired you in your work?
I draw inspiration from famous and not so famous for most creators, some of whom are even artists (sometimes the very energy of a given work, or the colors, even the love of the author for his work impresses me).
I will list a few names: Stefan Kanchev (undoubtedly the father of Bulgarian graphic design), Miroslav Zhivkov, Tsvetan Iliev, Nikola Angelakov (the last two were my teachers),
I continue with foreign designers and creators: Leonid Afremov, Dalibor Momchilovich, Erick Marinovich, Ceci New York - I recently discovered this wonderful lady who built a successful company and makes unique invitations and prints
